History of the Department

Yuvaraja's College started functioning in the year 1928. Initially only the two year intermediate course was offered with optional subjects like Botany, Zoology and Chemistry.  From 1948 onwards 3-year degree course was started.  The University of Mysore with the idea of diversification introduced new courses.  Biochemistry was one among them. Biochemistry was started as the major subject of the B.Sc., course in the Department of chemistry, Yuvaraja’s college in 1980.
Later the Biochemistry department was separated from the chemistry department in the year 2000 and started working independently under the headship of Dr. A.C. Sharada. A separate Biochemistry laboratory was established at YCM in 2003. The laboratory is well equipped with all the necessary basic facilities for the undergraduate teaching. The laboratory runs from all the week days from 7:30 AM to 6 PM to cater the needs of 360 students belonging to I, II, III B.Sc., and five year integrated M.Sc., Molecular  Biology.
Through the years the department has grown in terms of student strength. Initially the admission was for the combinations BBM, BBZ and BZF. The number of students seeking admissions is gradually increasing with the introduction of new combination BMBt. The Biochemistry section of the University under Graduate library is quite well stocked and thus full fills the needs of both teachers and students. Restructuring of the syllabus is done once in three years at national level.
The department has staff strength of six teachers with three permanent, one temporary and two guest lecturers.
