History of the Department

Yuvarajas College started functioning in the year 1928. In 1987, the University of Mysore, with the idea of diversification introduced new Science courses and among them Microbiology course was initiated.

Microbiologycourse was introduced at B.Sc. level in Yuvarajas College during the academic year 1987-88. Microbiology course is tagged with other optional subjects like Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Chemistry and Botany.

The Department of Microbiology is having three permanent staff and guest faculty. Dr. S. Mahadeva Murthy, Professor is having 29 years of teaching and research experience in the field of Mycology, Aquatic Microbiology, Agricultural Microbiology, Medical Microbiology and Herbal drug discovery. Dr. H.S. Jayanth Professor in Microbiology is having 27 years of teaching experience and seven years of research experience in the field of Bacteriology, Food safety and Sanitation, and Industrial Microbiology. Dr. P.K. Maheshwar, Professor in Microbiology is having 21 years of teaching and research experience and specialization in the field of Mycology, Mycotoxicology, Bacteriology, Medical Microbiology and Molecular Biology.


Dr. S. Mahadeva Murthy is member of BOS and BOE (UG) in Microbiology in many University/Colleges. Dr. H.S. Jayanth is a member of BOS and BOE in Microbiology (UG) Yuvarajas College and other University / Colleges. Dr. P.K. Maheshwar is a member of BOS and BOE in B.Sc., B.Tech, M.Sc., M.Tech Microbiology and Biotechnology in many Universities and Institutes. The department is well equipped with infrastructural facilities for teaching and research in basic and applied areas of Microbiology. The department has two exclusive Microbiology laboratories.


Department of Microbiology has been recognized as a research center in University of Mysore. Under the guidance of Dr. S. Mahadeva Murthy 11 students have been awarded for Ph.D. degree and 11 students for M. Phil. degree. Currently four students are working for the degree of Ph.D. He has successfully completed two major research projects and one minor research project sanctioned by UGC and MHRD, New Delhi. Dr. P.K. Maheshwar is having a major research project from UGC, New Delhi. Under the guidance of Dr. P.K. Maheshwar 02 students have been awarded for Ph.D. degree.

         
Restructuring of Microbiology syllabus has been done once a year at the National level. There is a full-fledged Microbiology laboratory. About 250 books on various aspects of Microbiology are made available at Under Graduate Library in the college campus.

         
The teaching staff is highly qualified and has to its credit scientific publications in National and International reputed journals. The thrust areas of research in the department include Bacteriology, Mycology, Medical Microbiology, Mycotoxicology and Molecular Biology. The Department of Microbiology is planning to start consultancy services to public in the areas of water treatment, Plant disease diagnostics and Biofertilizers for agriculture.
