The Department was started in the year 2003-04 as a branch in the Department of Zoology under the direction and guidance of Principal, late Prof A.M. Puttaswamygowda and Prof. B.K. Jagadisha. Later during the academic year 2006-07 it was separated with an independent status as DEPARTMENT OF BIOTECHNOLOGY.

The Department is having one permanent staff and four guest lecturers. At present Dr. Chandavar. Vidya. R, Associate Professor in Zoology is heading the Department. She is having 19 years of teaching experience at Yuvaraja’s College and 18 years of research experience in the field of ENDOCRINOLOGY. Other guest faculties are also well qualified and enrolled for research. The faculty members have attended conferences, seminars and workshops of their interest/related fields.

The overall student strength of the department is about 180 in the year 2015. Individual students are exposed to both theory and practical classes/experiments.
