Biotechnology subject was started in the year 2003-04 as a branch in the Department of Zoology. Later in 2006-07 it was separated and functioning as an independent department. Since Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary subject, is being headed by Dr. H. B MaheshSericulture (2006-11), Dr. A. C Sharada- Biochemistry (2011-13), Dr. Chandavar. Vidya. RTransferred from Zoology (2013-15), Dr. Krishna-Botany (2015-19), Dr. J. Rajesh– Biochemistry (2019-21). At present, Dr. Chandavar Vidya. R, Professor in Zoology is heading the department. She is having 25 years of teaching experience and 24 years of research experience. She was awarded with minor and major research projects in the field of pancreatic endocrinology from University Grants Commission, New Delhi as well as Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi, amounting to 92.31 L. She is having number of research papers published in national and international journals with impact factor of 4.32. She has submitted 40 mtDNA sequences of M. trijuga and L. punctata to NCBI GenBank. Additionally she is supervising students for PhD degree, attended many conferences and symposia. The department is having three contract teachers and four guest lecturers who are also having research experiences.

The Department is well equipped with infrastructural facilities for teaching. About 250 books on various aspects of Biotechnology are made available at under graduate library (UGL) in the College campus. The department has a collection of many books which are used for reference of both faculty and students.

The syllabus is being regularly revised as per regulations and updated as and when required. The Department has maintained several equipments such as: Binocular Stereo Microscopes (four numbers), Microscopes (12 numbers), Spectrophotometer, Colorimeter (five numbers), Laminar Air flow cabinet, pH Meter, Electronic Balance (two numbers), Hot air Oven, Autoclave, High speed Homogenizer, Cooling Centrifuge, Table Top High Speed centrifuge, Table Top centrifuge, Quartz distillation unit, Steel distillation unit, Rotary shaker, Deep Freezer (-20 Degree Celcius) with UPS backup, BOD incubator, Refrigerator, Micro pipettes, Vortex mixer, Transilluminator, Water bath, Computer with internet facility, LCD Projector, Laptop computers, Gel Documentation System, Vertical and Horizontal electrophoretic units with power pack, Fume hood, Inoculation Chamber, Bacteriological Incubator, Electrotransfer system, Paper chromatography units etc.,
