History of the Department

The Department was started in the year 2003-04. Later on, it was separated as an independent department during the academic year 2006-07. The Department has no permanent faculty members. However, it is being headed by the senior faculty members from the department of Biochemistry, Botany and Zoology on rotation basis for a period of two years. Currently, Dr. Rajesh J, Associate professor of Biochemistry is heading the department. He is having 20 years of teaching experience apart from several years of research experience in the area of Biochemistry, biotechnology, food chemistry, phytochemicals, bioactives and nutraceuticals. He has completed several minor and major research projects funded by various funding agencies like department of Science and Technology, New Delhi; University Grants Commission, New Delhi and University of Mysore, Mysuru. Additionally, he is supervising students for their Phd degress, and has good number of national and international publications to his credit. He also participated in various National and International conferences. The department has three contract teachers and four guest lecturers. Both have attended conferences, seminars and workshops in their interest/related fields.

The overall student strength of the department is about 200 during the academic year 2019-2020. Individual students are exposed to both theory and practical classes/experiments. Evaluation of the students at department level is by conducting regular internal assessments. Students are encouraged to prepare scientific models, present seminars and so on. The department is organizing Study tours/Field trips to the students to various Scientific and career oriented organizations/Institutions related to Biotechnology and other such areas in order to enrich their knowledge and pursue their career in the field.

The Department is well equipped with infrastructural facilities for teaching. About 250 books on various aspects of Biotechnology are made available at under graduate library (UGL) in the College campus. The department has a collection of many books which are used for reference of both faculty and students.

The syllabus is being regularly revised as per CBCS regulations and also as and when the updates are needed. The Department has maintained several equipments such as: Binocular Stereo Microscopes (four numbers), Microscopes (12 numbers), Spectrophotometer, Colorimeter (five numbers), Laminar Air flow cabinet, pH Meter, Electronic Balance (two numbers), Hot air Oven, Autoclave, High speed Homogenizer, Cooling Centrifuge, Table Top High Speed centrifuge, Table Top centrifuge, Quartz distillation unit, Steel distillation unit, Rotary shaker, Deep Freezer (-20oC) with UPS backup, BOD incubator, Refrigerator, Micro pipettes, Vortex mixer, Transilluminator, Water bath, Computer with internet facility, LCD Projector, Laptop computer, Gel Documentation System, Vertical and Horizontal electrophoresis units with power pack, Fume hood, Inoculation Chamber, Bacteriological Incubator, Electrotransfer system, Paper chromatography units and so on.
